Characteristics of reported acute pesticide poisoning cases in Luzhou city from 2008 to 2018

  • Objective To understand the situation of acute pesticide poisoning in Luzhou city, and to provide the basis for taking effective prevention and control measures to reduce the occurrence of pesticide poisoning.
    Methods The reported data of pesticide poisoning cases in Luzhou city from 2008 to 2018 was abstracted in the "Occupational disease and occupational health information monitoring system", and the cause of poisoning, the characteristics of poisoning cases, the occurrence time and area, and pesticide varieties were analyzed.
    Results From 2008 to 2018, a total of 1 017 cases of pesticide poisoning were reported in Luzhou city, among which occupational poisoning accounted for 6.78% and non-occupational poisoning accounted for 93.22%. A total of 659 cases were the suicides, 2.28 times than cases taken by accidental ingestion (289 cases). The incidence of pesticide poisoning was increasing year by year(P < 0.05). There were 50 deaths reported and the fatality was 4.92%. The fatality rate of non-occupational poisoning (5.17%) was 3.57 times higher than that of occupational poisoning (1.45%), and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Male cases accounted for 51.4% and females 48.6%, but the number of occupational poisoning cases among males was much higher than females. The elderly cases over 60 years old accounted for 32.35%, and the fatality rate in this age group was also the highest (7.29%). Among 948 cases of non-occupational pesticide poisoning, 46 died from suicide, with the case fatality rate of 6.98%, and 3 died from accidental ingestion, with the case fatality rate of 1.04%, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Occupational poisoning occurred often during July to September, and non-occupational poisoning occurred in January to March. Luxian county, Gulin county and Hejiang County ranked the top three in the number of reported poisoning cases. Insecticides were major chemicals causing poisoning, accounting for 65.68%.
    Conclusion The pesticide poisoning in Luzhou city was mainly non-occupational poisoning. We should focus on caring for the left behind elderly and provide psychological counseling for those with suicidal tendency. The management of pesticide use, storage should be strengthened to reduce the occurrence of pesticide poisoning.
