Investigation on the current status and influencing factors of occupational burnout among medical technicians in primary health care institutions in Shanghai Pudong New Area

  • Objective To understand the current status of occupational burnout among medical technicians in primary health care institutions in Shanghai Pudong New Area and to analyze the possible influencing factors so as to improve the occupational health of this population.
Methods From May to August 2021, medical technicians from 20 community health service centers in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, were randomly selected as the study subjects. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) was used to investigate occupational burnout. The logistic regression model was used to analyze the related factors affecting occupational burnout.
Results A total of 301 questionnaires were received, and 295 were valid, with a valid recovery rate of 98.01%. The scores of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, the three dimensions of occupational burnout of medical technicians in primary health care institutions, were (9.28 ± 5.70), (8.47 ± 5.32), and (17.74 ± 7.67), respectively. The frequency of occupational burnout was 65.42% (193/295). The binary multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of occupational burnout for females was 1.095 times that of males (P < 0.05); the risk of occupational burnout in individuals aged 31-40 years was 1.927 times that of those aged ≤ 30 years (P < 0.05); the risk of occupational burnout in individuals with a monthly income of 6 000-6 999 yuan was 1.259 times that of those with a monthly income < 5 000 yuan (P < 0.05); the risk of occupational burnout in individuals with a working time of 5 to < 10 years and 10 to < 20 years was 1.683 and 1.307 times that of those with a working time < 5 years (P < 0.05); the risk of occupational burnout in individuals with senior titles was 0.711 times that of those with junior titles (P < 0.05); the risk of occupational burnout in individuals with a weekly working time ≥ 50 h was 2.168 times that of those with a weekly working time < 40 h (P < 0.05); and the risk of occupational burnout in individuals not working night shifts was 0.803 times that of those doing (P < 0.05).
Conclusions The occupational burnout situation of medical technicians in primary health care institutions in Pudong New Area was not optimistic. Primary health care institutions should pay attention to their mental health status, specifically the female, the young and middle-aged, the staff with longer weekly working hours and working night shifts, implement necessary health intervention measures, and increase targeted care and support.
